Medium Wave is the original radio broadcasting band, in use since the early 1920's. Typically it's used by stations serving a local or regional audience. However, at night, signals are no longer absorbed by the lower levels of the ionosphere, and can often be heard hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
It's a challenge. Hearing stations from outside their intended coverage area - sometimes for their programmes, their music or just the thrill of hearing distant countries. Radio propagation isn't constant and many factors influence it. The time of day and the time of year affect the strength of signals. Radiation emitted by the sun changes daily which affects the earth's ionosphere as well as the approximate 11 year cycle of sunspot activity.
